Abstract
In the present study, the prevalence of OME was investigated in children of elementary schools in Anyang area and followed up in the same group of children after two years. Tympanometry and Otoscopic examination were performed on the first and second grade elementary school children, during spring season (March-May) in 2000. And then, we repeated the examinations on the same group (i.e., third and fourth grade elementary school children) two years later. In addition, the relationships between the prevalence rate and etiologic factors, such as, indirect smoking, nasal symptom, allergic symptom, asthma and other respiratory disease conditions were evaluated by statistical analysis. The prevalences of OME in the first and second grade elementary school children were 8.74% and 9.16%, and, were decreased abruptly to 1.98% and 1.55% two years later. The prevalence of OME in girls was higher than that in boys (p< 0.05). Indirect smoking, nasal symptoms, allergic symptoms, asthma and other respiratory disease conditions were not significantly related to the changes of prevalence rate of OME (p>0.05). The prevalences of OME showed a decreasing tendency as this age group of children has grown up.
